Hello my name is Edwin Andino and im with the business group. When we went to work today we learned about the local multiplier effect. IT is mainly about people puting there money into the community, the local business then spends the money at a local store. The iea is that each time the money is spent in the community the money multiplies, hence forth the Multiplier effect. For every dollar spent in the local business .45 cents is put back into the community. With corporate businesses the coumminty recives only15 cents of the dollar, that is only .15 cents is put back into the community. As you can see the more local bussiness we have in the community the better we are in the long run and the more we shop in local bussinessthe better we are.
HI MY NAME IS RODNEY AND I AM A GROWING GREEN WORKS YOUTH THAT HAS MADE A DIFFERENCE TO MY FELLOW EMPLOYEES. US AND OUR STARTER HAS CHANGRD MAP AND PEOPLE AROUND US. THE LAST RECENT EVENTS HAS GIVEN US A BIG NAME FOR US AND OUR CHILI STARTER.LAST WEEK ON DEC. 7TH, WE HAD A PRESENTATION ON OUR CHILI STARTER THAT WAS HELD AT THE BILOCAL CONCERT. I HAD A GOOD TIME AT THE CONCERT AND I HAS HAD A MAJOR MIPACT ON ME AND MY LIFE.
Hey whats up, it's Carisma again. Today was so fun we played a really cool game called Jamba. The idea of jamba is to see how much a person knows or has paid attention. Lina, Edwin and Rodney won in that order. The categories were pretty easy it's just that with the other people playing you have to be quick on your feet. I sad enough to say was not quick enough. I still had fun. I am so excited for thursday to get here. On thursday is the unvailing of our Amazing Chili Starter. The unvailing is at a really fancy hotel on Elmwood. The name of the hotel is Elmwood Village Inn. It is for promoting our chili starter. We already sold five jars of it last thursday. It felt so good to sell our chili starter. I hope we sell more at the unvailing. I can't wait, we are going to have it displayed on a table, and I hope a lot of people will be there. We also have to dress up nice. I think I have a nice dress to wear, if I don't I'll just go and buy one. I'm hoping to look like I am in a movie at one of those cocktail parties. The kind that sophisticated people with a lot of money give. The unvailing is on the thirteenth of this month. I hope to see you there. It is going to be a lot of fun.
In other news, we got another packer. The name of the packer is Coach Tonys. The packer is in Bergen. From what Zoe said they sound like they are real excited about working with us.
I'l tell you more next time. I have to go, so I guess thats all folks, well for now.
What Is a Co-op

Now on to the exciting world of co-ops. A co-op is a special kind of business. When starting a business it's cool to make all the money and be your own boss. Yeah right, when you're the only boss you also have a lot of responsibilities. Say for instance your business is a total flop, you are the only one in debt and you are the only one responsible for paying it. With a co-op there is more than one boss so you share the responsibility. So maybe you have to share the money, so you don't make as much as a person who doesn't have a co-op, but then again if the business tanks you won't have as much debt either. The debt could be shared between the owners of the business. One of the seven co-op principles says that everyone who works invests. Yes I did say seven. I don't remember them all because there are just to many, but then again I don't remember what I had for breakfast this morning either ,but that's not the point. The main one I remember is everyone gets an equal vote, meaning no matter what your role is in the company everyone has equal say. I also know co-ops have the free will and do most of the time work with other co-ops. The business group is a co-op. We are a workers co-op, meaning we work to give other youth jobs, pretty cool huh? The one thing I love about being a co-op is the fact that it cares about the community and the people in it. I definitely care about my community, because it's my home. The one place that will always be there for you when you need it the most. The people will always be there to help you through a crisis, so why not care? Your community is where your friends are where you have to go to everyday. If you don't care then that is just sad. Let me ask you do you want your future children and future grandchildren to grow up in a community where everyone can't stand each other and the surroundings are just nasty? I don't, and I'm quite sure a lot of people agree with me.

Hey whats up. It's Carisma again. Guess what? I have a secret I want to share. It's all about the food system and co-ops. The first thing you need to know about the food system is it isn't all about hamburgers from burger king or McDonalds. The food system is much larger than that, and deeper. It deals with where food comes from, and how far it has to travel to get to you. Right now everyone is part of a food system, not to be confused with food chain. You are part of your community food system, though many people don't think about it that much...What is a community food system? I know, who actually stops and wonders once a day what is a community food system. Yet we all are part each and everyday. There are four things a community food system has that seperates it from the globalized food system...
  1. food security is a goal where everyone in the neighborhood has good (healthy) food to eat
  2. proximity or how far you have to travel to get to your food, if you have to travel a long way (be honest) you're probably going to end up going to the corner store, because its closer. good proximity makes sure there is healthy avaliable food near you.
  3. self-reliance means whether or not the community is completely independent and does not have to rely on anyone else to get the things that they need.
  4. SUSTAINABILITY-good reason why this one is different from all the rest. It refers to keeping the system going for future generations. This is probably the most important of all the four. I mean do you want your future grandchildren to grow up without this wonderful food system we have now? I don't.
The food system is basically about what is best for you and your needs.

Here is a picture of Juan and Ricky building our green bean trellaces. For each one we make a 3-D ladder and the bean vines just grow up up up.

Hey this is Carisma and Rodney, we're in the business group. About two weeks ago we went to the BLAST conference in Holyoke, Massachusetts. BLAST (Building Local Agriculture Systems Today) is part of the Food Project, a youth and community development organization that does great projects like us! We met with youth from other cities to talk about making food more local and easier to get for everyone. We were interested in being around other youth urban agriculture groups from Brooklyn, Holyoke, Poughkeepse and even Maine. If you want to know more about Blast go to www.the food project.org and look under "Blast youth intiative."
Before we went to the conference in Massachusetts, we went to a panel discussion at the Asareese Community Center for Community Peace Week in Buffalo. It was put on by Buffalo State College and the discussion was about youth and their involvement in economic deveopment. We were the experts so the discussion was real exciting. There was about sixty-five people there! People had some really good questions. I found myself speaking more than I have before in my entire lifetime. So anyways, what we are trying to get across is that the people in Growing Green have made a difference in our community.
"That's All FOlks" . . . . .for today!

Hello, my is Barbly YuWar and I'm sixteen year's old I work with the Growing Green Program and this is my second year here. We have
different teams and every week one team does different activities like cooking, going to a soup kitchen to serve food or teach young kids about eating healthy and gardening. But today I just want to tell you about what I do in the Growing Green business group. My role in the business is on the Recipe team. We make the product in our kitchen. The salsa has black beans, corn, garlic, peppers, onions, cilantro, tomatoes and other good things. I like the salsa because it tastes fresh and mild. There are a lot of rules to make our salsa safe for the public so we can sell it. When we made our salsa everyone who is part of our team had to wash their hands and do their part by cleaning the kitchen. We also learn how to work together in teams or in groups. Today we went out to the community and talk to them about our program and our BBQ for Eat In Act Out coming up. As you can see in Growing Green we try to educate others as we are being educated in the program. thats about it for now . . . .

Hi it's Carisma again. Today in the business part of the Growing Green program we talked about business of course. First, we took a test, just like in school, only it was an open book test. After the test was over we went over it. It was mostly about co-ops, and what is the difference between a co-op and a regular business. The test also required a little knowledge about business plans, as well as kitchen knowledge. Later we got to talk about colors. There is a awful lot of information I was not aware of. There are the primary colors, and secondary colors of course, but there is also a third group of colors called tertiary colors. These colors result when a primary and a secondary color is put together, such as red orange. The group also learned about which colors make people hungry, which colors calm people down, etc. What I found was most interesting was babies seem to like the color red, but cry more longer and louder if put into a room of yellow. I found that this experience has helped me out for when I plan on having kids in my thirties. I now know not to paint the baby room yellow. Talk to you later.

Hello my name is Carisma Robinson, and I am a member of the Growing Green program. This is my first year working at Growing Green, and I have found the experience highly educational. I have had a lot of fun working here. I enjoy coming to work, because Inot only think this program can help me out with my future plans but it also is just so much fun. My most favorite memory is helping out Loaves and Fishes. Loaves and Fishes is a soup kitchen. It was a lot of work but I really enjoyed working there. This was my first time working in a soup kitchen, and it turned out better than I thought it was going to be. I hope to have many more great experiences while here at Growing Green. That's All Folks.

Hi my name is Thomas Chappell, this is my first year at Growing Green. I enjoy the program it teaches you to take consideration for the community, and kinda forces you to work on a goal to be healthy. Yesterday the Growing Green youth team watched a film call Super Size Me, it was interesting this film was about how unhealthy fast food is (McDonalds) they did an expermint on the food at McDonalds Morgan Spurlock conducted this test he wanted to see what would happen if he was to eat McDonals foe 30 days and 30 nights for breakfasts lunch and dinner. Then at the end of the experiment he went from 185 to 210 and his blood pressure went up very high. Well thats it for today i hope you enjoyed my blog.

My name is Juan Torres. This is my first year in the Growing Green program. So far this has been a great experience working in the garden and working with other people. My name is Lina Shafie and I am 16 years old. This is my first year working in Growning Green and I like it alot. This is a great experinece for me and I learn alot of things in this program. It teaches me many things and shows me what I could do in life. For example it builds up my character and teaches me how to plant the proper way and also what kinds of food are organic. Today I learned what its like to work as a team and what you need to do to work together. I like working in Growning Green and takeing many experince to my future.

My name is Edwin Andino and I have been with Growing Green for four years and each year has been very interesting. Everyday, I come to work I think to myself, 'it's going to be a good day,' because its just a good place to be. Four years ago I didn't have anything to do with my life. Then Growing Green came into my life and took me out of the streets. I like Growing Green because we do lots of different things, like going to a soup kitchen, gardening and other cool stuff. If I could give someone advise, I would tell them to join Growing Green, if you do it well it will be the best thing to happen in your life.
My Experience Working With Growing Green

My name is Barbly YuWar, I'm sixteen years old and I just want to talk about my experience of working with growing green. During the summer I learn more about growing fresh food, team work and how to be able to speak my mind to others. Today I learned how to do cooperation and cooperative businesses and also planting crops. I think growing green project is a good program for young adults to go to and be trained for new experience. Another experience is that they teach us to go out to teach the younger kids about the things we learn. Also growing green teachs us about respecting others peoples rights and a lot more.
WE LIKE TACOS!!!!! JEREMY LEARNED HOW TO CUT APPLES TODAY. TODAY TEAM#1 COOKED A BIG LUNCH FOR EVERYBODY IN THE PROGRAM. WE LEARNED ABOUT DIFFERENT THINGS ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE HERATIGE AND DIFFERENT COOKING TECHNIQUES.
Today we are setting up our blog! and planning for a visit from the Tribal Youth Council. We are also working to prepare for the Eat In Act Out Week in August.
We watched a movie this morning, it was kinda boring, it was too educational. Its raining out side so we are inside all day. We talked about what the movie was about, why farmers get booted off their land, about monopolies in the farming industries, how animals die from disease because the are all pack in to the cages real tight. One thing that stood out was a woman who said that farmers only make 3.5c per loaf of bread and it take 6c to grow the grain to make that loaf.
After lunch we played a game where we wrote five things about ourselves on a post it note that we thought no one else would know about us. Then the group had to guess who the post it belonged to.
