Planting the three sisters in the Youth Garden

By Say Ra and Eh Soe

The three sisters are corn, beans and squash. Corn provides a natural pole for bean vines to climb. Beans fix nitrogen on their roots. Beans vines also help stabilize the corn plants. Shallow rooted squash vines shade the ground and prevent soil moisture from evaporating.

We planted black eyed peas and corn seeds. We made holes six inches apart and one inch deep. We planted two different seeds in the same hole so the two plants can support each other right away.
