The Culinary Experience

By Adam Picard-Park

I joined MAP this summer to find out what a summer job was like. It is technically my first summer job. I worked for my mom last summer assisting MAP, but now I am interested to see what the actual program is like.
I was happy to find out that Donacian was my partner because we had become friends last year during the program. I also like to cook, which was my job as a Culinary Specialist.

On the first day, I didn’t know what to expect from the program. I was pleasantly surprised by my peers’ knowledge. Everyone worked hard at their jobs in the first week. The Farm and Garden Specialists helped my group out a lot by informing us about what produce was available from the garden.

I think it’s really cool that we use produce that we grow ourselves, because it saves money for us to cook bigger meals. It is also better to use fresh vegetables. After we planned the meal we were ready to cook it on Friday.

The meal we made on Friday changed my perspective on healthy foods. We made something tasty out of some vegetables I usually would stay away from. It’s a good lesson for all of the youth who are picky about vegetables.

I like cooking because it makes me feel free to express myself through the art of food. My job allows me to be creative.
